Post Election Civil War?
In preparation for this weeks post I was severely taken aback when I googled "War" and the first 4 articles that came up had to do with civil war in America after the election. While the credibility of these claims should seriously be taken into consideration, the fact that multiple sources felt the need to publish an article sent alarm bells off that some people actually might be considering this as a real possibility depending on who gets elected.
Some people such as Ray Dalio, the billionaire who created the worlds largest hedge fund "Bridge water Associations" goes as far to say he believes there is a 50% chance a war breaks out after the election. While this may not be taking up arms and fighting, he expects there to be a massive defiance of federal law from far right and far left radicals. Others such as Dr. Aaron McKain, Executive Director of the Institute or Digital Humanity believes that we are already seeing a full on information war between the right and left in the media. While we can expect to see civil unrest and protesting like the previous elections, there is a heightened sense that this year might be some of the worst we have seen. This fear has defiantly impacted people across all of America making some fear that they need to do some form of doomsday prepping like stocking up on what they deem as essential items.
Again these source need to be taken with a grain of salt. Like we have been discussing in this class one of the biggest goals of new sources is to get traffic drawn to their websites so things like sounding the alarm on the next American Civil war deferentially draws attention. However we do live in crazy times so maybe my next post will be covering whatever bizarre event transpires after election day. ReplyDeleteIt is extremely scary to think that there could be a potential "war" after the election due to selfish behavior. It is ironic how we are called the United States when during the election times it feels as though we are far from being united. Everyone believes their political side is superior than the others, and go as far as removing friends from their lives due to their political stance. No matter the outcome, I hope we as a country accept the new terms and live in harmony as we try to better ourselves as a country with the new president.
People like Ray Dalio and Dr. Aaron McKain raise valid concerns about growing polarization, especially as we enter a new era of politics. I can only imagine how time will eventually exacerbate negativity in politics. Nonetheless, I do feel somewhat hopeful that there are actors who are willing to protect democracy and actively represent their constituency. Because of them, I think that we will be okay.
